Barking & Dagenham
Centre for Independent, Integrated, Inclusive Living Consortium
On the 2nd December over 300 people celebrated IDDP at the new Becontree Heath Leisure Centre built by Leadbitter – our major sponsor. The IDDP theme was the Paralympics and guests took part in 6 Paralympic sports: swimming, cycling, boccia, wheelchair basketball, football and table tennis. Guests were also taken on a tour of the sports centre detailing some of the design features including the new changing place provision which helps to provide a much greater level of accessibility to all the disabled community.
Over 100 children representing five schools took part in the celebration with five children winning gold medals in our Paralympic challenge. We also announced the winner of our annual IDDP schools competition – a year 6 student from St. Vincents Catholic Primary School who created a journey planner from Barking and Dagenham to the Paralympic Stadium.
Paralympic gold medallists Beverley Gull MBE and Dan Bentley talked about their sports and amazing experiences as Paralympians and spoke about the excitement of London 2012. There were many local organisations providing information on how to engage in sporting and leisure activities with more information available in the Barking and Dagenham Disability Sports directory.
Barking and Dagenham College provided photography students to help capture the images of our celebration. A further selection of photographs will be available at www.iddp.org.uk.
